McAuliffe statement on the decision of the educational institution of opportunity
Governor Terry McAuliffe issued the following statement following the ruling of a Norfolk Circuit Court judge in the Virginia Opportunity educational institution trial:
My team and I are evaluating today’s decision and will make a decision on the next steps soon. Regardless of today’s decision, Secretary Anne Holton, Superintendent of Public Education Steve Staples and my entire administration are committed to working collaboratively with school divisions and the Board of Education to improve outcomes in all communities, and especially in our struggling schools. We absolutely have to do better with the children in these schools.
Reducing the Achievement Gap is a top priority for me and my entire team. It will be necessary to work in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Education, local school divisions, other state and local agencies and communities to ensure our young people have the best possible chance for success. Part of our efforts will include continuing the bipartisan effort to reform our existing learning standards system to better serve all of our students. Our Innovation Committee on Learning Standards will begin its work this summer.
Education Secretary Anne Holton and Superintendent of Education Steve Staples will work with other state and local partners to get all of our priority schools back on track.
