PANJIM: In an effort to make school buildings safe and secure, the Goa government will undertake a structural audit of all school and college buildings in the state to assess the current condition of the frame.
The decision to conduct the structural audit of school buildings was taken at a meeting chaired by Secretary (Education) Sanjay Kumar.
Kumar said PWD engineers have been asked to inspect all school and university buildings – government and aid – to check the strength of each structure. âWe also asked them to check the width of the stairs and to ensure that the buildings are suitable for people with disabilities. ”
Kumar said based on the audit, the government will decide to repair or rebuild by demolishing weak buildings.
The Director (Administration) of the Education Directorate, Varsha Naik, said: âPWD, Work Divisions V, VIII, XVI and XXVII (Buildings) will audit and submit the report to the government. Based on the recommendations, the government will take immediate corrective and preventive action. “
Likewise, all principals of government-subsidized schools and colleges will be asked to perform a structural audit of their buildings and take preventive measures to ensure that the structures are safe and pose no risk to students and the other occupants. PWD engineers will oversee the audit of government-subsidized school and college buildings in order to know the actual condition of these buildings, âNaik said, adding that they were asked to complete the structural audit as soon as possible. .
There are 742 public primary schools, 41 public secondary schools, 78 public secondary schools, nine upper secondary schools and five public colleges. There are also 282 government-subsidized primary schools, nine colleges, 314 secondary schools, 86 upper secondary schools and 27 colleges.
The government has also decided to urgently undertake repairs to five public primary schools. These are the public primary school of 1st Bairo and Bundh in Santa Cruz, the public primary schools of Vasco Main and Baina and the public primary schools of Paliem-Ucassaim.
âThese five public primary schools are in urgent need of repair and we are looking for alternative arrangements there,â Naik said.
